Object type: art work
Maker: Kepes, Gyorgy
Date made: 1970-1972
Materials: wood; aluminum; rubber tubing; gas jets; speaker
Measurements: 2' wide x 2' deep x 6" high
Components: 5 Modules; Loose materials: 1 square aluminum plate. The complete installation had 6 square boxes, each housing a 2-foot by 2-foot by 3-inch container of gas and a sound speaker that vibrated the gas. The gas would be turned on and escape through a series of very small holes perforating the aluminum sheet on the top of the box. These were ignited and as composer Paul Earls' music played, the flames vibrated and leapt about. One module was showcased in the MIT 150 Exhibition.
