A vignette of the HMS 'Monarch' in Portland, Maine carrying the body of the late philanthropist George M. Peabody to the United States from London for his burial. When Peabody died in London on November 4, 1869, he was given temporary burial in the Westminster Abbey at the request of the Dean of Westminster and approval of the Queen. Prime Minister Gladstone arranged for the body to be transported to America.
