A port-side view of the steamer 'Rising Star' owned by the New-York Mail Steamship Company. The print is a proof without a title and publication information in the lower margin. Identifying information is hand written. On the cover of the paddle wheel is a large roundel with two figures flanking an escutcheon with a bird flying above it. The name of the ship and the company are also on the paddle wheel cover. The New York Times on July 23, 1865 described her as such: "The Rising Star is a picture of nautical beauty, unsurpassed by any ocean steamship, and her construction will ad lustre to the already established reputation of American skill in naval architecture."
