The yacht 'Volunteer' is rounding the lightship at Sandy Hook on September 27, 1887. The photograph was taken by John S. Johnston during an America's Cup race. 'Volunteer' raced against the Scottish challenger 'Thistle' and won. She was the first winning America's Cup yacht with an all steel frame and hull.
