Portrait of the German poet Friedrich Schiller, 1759-1805. Schiller, in a white wig, black jacket, and a shirt with an opened collar, is depicted seated, with a book in his hand and a contemplative expression on his face. Around the portrait is an elaborate border showing six small scenes, including St. George and the dragon at bottom left and Galatea driving her whales or dolphins at bottom centre. Below the image is printed the title, artist attributions, and the following text: "London, Brain & Payne, 12, Paternoster Row."
