Hand-colored copperplate map (No. 24) from the 1608 or 1612 Italian publication of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Abraham Ortelius. This map comes from an edition that had 300 copies printed as indicated by the last lines, left aligned Italian text on the verso: "di Castiglia, & il cap. 97. del viaggio di Gio. Vgone Lindscotano." The Azores, an archipelago of Portugal, played a major role in crossings of the Atlantic from the earliest exploration.
