World War I mine-laying submarine, half-hull model made by Charles D. Wheelock, Course XIIIA, Class of 1924, 1923. The U.S. Navy began sending its officers from the Department of Construction and Repair to MIT for advanced training in naval architecture (known as Course X111A) in 1901. Wheelock would become head of design for the Navy's Bureau of Ships during World War II.
