Color engraving of a beached Delphinorynchus with two seabirds in the foreground and a channel of water, behind which lies an outcropping of cliffs with a ruined castle, in the background. Several ships are depicted in the background. The genus Delphinorynchus was proposed by M. Blainville, although it is not used in modern taxonomy. The specimen here depicted was found at Brest and the drawing is based on observations made by Yan Breda, a professor of natural history at Gand. Breda observed the animal to be eight feet in length.
