Cosmetic Series: Self-Portrait #3

Major collection: Holography
Named collection: Holography Collection
Object type: hologram
Maker: Benyon, Margaret
Date made: 1986
Materials: reflection hologram; gouache
Measurements: 10 in x 8 in
Nomenclature: fine art
Classification: holograms

This self portrait combines a reflection hologram with an underpainting carefully registered with the hologram, so that both appear to be fused into one image. The painting appears to colour the hologram, and can be seen on its own when the hologram lighting is switched off. This avoids the alternative of a seemingly blank sheet of glass on a wall.

Originally acquired for the MOH's Futuresight Collection, the self portrait became the first in the Cosmetic Series, an extensive body of work featuring female and male heads in hieratic, frontal and central positions. The series as a whole reflects aesthetic, holographic, ideological, cultural, historical, psychological, and personal concerns. Photo: M. Benyon © Please note that due to the unique challenges of holography as a medium, high-resolution digital images are not available for most items in the holography collection. Please contact us for more information on reproducing images of holograms.
