7 Diffraction Gratings
Named collection: Holography Collection
Object type: hologram
Maker: Museum of Holography
Date made: 1978
Materials: white light transmission; film
Measurements: 16 1/2 in x 1/2 in
Nomenclature: miscellaneous
Classification: holograms
Seven rounds pieces of film arranged in a circular formation and sandwiched between 2 large round pieces of plexiglas; at center of backside of piece is a bracket with hole; this allowed the work to be attached to a special motorized mount that could spin the work around; adhered to front of piece is a round, green-painted piece of wood that has 7 round holes cut out of it, allowing the 7 holograms to be seen; each hologram contains a different diffraction grating pattern that breaks light up into different patterns; as the work rotates, diffraction patterns are visible is each hologram when that hologram passes in front of a light that is placed behind the work.
Please note that due to the unique challenges of holography as a medium, high-resolution digital images are not available for most items in the holography collection. Please contact us for more information on reproducing images of holograms.
