"This work shows, at about 1000x magnification, a 3-D view of a fractured piece of aluminum that has been reinforced with alumina fibers. To produce it, the specimen was placed in a scanning electron microscope to be sequentially imaged and rotated through 100 sequential angles of view, each separated by 1/3 degree. The images were automatically recentered by computer and superimposed on this hologram.


(from display label used during exhibition); Holographic image is on a smaller glass plate that is adhered to a larger glass plate; top and bottom of larger plate are protected by narrow pieces of black metal; 2 long pieces of wire come out of the top metal piece, allowing the work to be hung.
