A port-broadside view of the SS 'President,' operated by the British and American Steam Navigation, idling in the River Mersey in Liverpool while passengers embark onto the ship. Passengers board the ship after being ferried by small rowboats or a small steam pilot boat. The Liverpool skyline is in the background. The manuscript inscription in the bottom left margin details how the ship left for New York on March 11, 1841, and was lost at sea. She was never found. According to the inscription, Mr. Tyrone Power, a comedian, and the son of the Duke of Richmond were among the passengers.
