In the foreground, men in whaleboats prepare to strike a spouting whale; behind them are two more whaleboats, one bearing the British flag and with the letters R.D. (probably for Robert Dodd, the draughtsman) emblazoned upon it. Two large whaling ships behind them, one with a French flag and the other with a red flag bearing the Union Jack in the canton. More ships and whaleboats in the background. Title and artist names printed in lower margin. Davis Straight is located between mid-western Greenland and Baffin Island (Canada).
