Set of four images showing scenes from Gerrit de Veer's account of the Dutch expedition to Nova Zemblya in 1596-7, during which their ships were frozen in the ice and they were forced to spend the winter ("overwinterten") there. Clockwise from top left, the images depict a man being mauled by a polar bear, stretching out his arm in supplication to a comrade who seems about to run away; a galleon shipwrecked on the ice as men roll barrels of supplies out of the ship and across the ice; ships' boats by the ice full of goods with men unloading them; a group of men cutting up a bear as another bear approaches a wooden fortification in the background.
