Major collection: Holography
Named collection: Holography Collection
Object type: hologram
Maker: Benton, Stephen A.; Jackson, Rosemary H.
Date made: 1978-1979
Materials: laser transmission; glass
Measurements: 13 1/2 in x 12 1/2 in x 1/4 in
Nomenclature: historical
Classification: holograms

Three outlines of apples etched into front of glass plate; when lit from behind by laser, 3 red apples float in space in background, behind the etched image.

Made to imitate Dr. Dennis Gabor's first experiments with mercury arc-lit transparencies; hologram is on a glass plate which is adhered to a slightly larger glass plate; the bottom inch of the larger plate overlaps the holographic plate, creating a lip that was used to place the hologram in a pedestal; 2 holes in the lip allowed the glass plate to be better secured in the pedestal; because of this set-up, large cracks appear in the lip (now held in place by tape), due to damage caused by Museum of Holography patrons. Please note that due to the unique challenges of holography as a medium, high-resolution digital images are not available for most items in the holography collection. Please contact us for more information on reproducing images of holograms.
