"Most holograms are same-size images of inert objects. The synthesis of 3-D holographic images from a `scan' of 100 or so side-to-side flat photographic views widens the scope and power of the new medium. Conventional lighting and photographic methods can be adapted to produce striking and vital images." (from display label used during exhibition); portrait of holographer/artist Dieter Jung, shown seated, from waist up; he holds a long, clear, glass cube in his left hand so that it partially blocks his face; when viewer stands to left of hologram, his face is shown reflected in the cube; when viewer moves to right, his actual face is unblocked by the cube, and the image of his face in the cube disappears; holographic image is on a smaller glass plate that is adhered to a larger glass plate; top and bottom of larger plate are protected by narrow pieces of black metal; 2 long pieces of wire come out of the top metal piece, allowing the work to be hung; `copyright 1988 MIT Media Lab' is etched into the bottom of the larger piece of glass.
