To make high-speed motion-pictures, Edgerton designed a camera without a shutter that rushed the film through continuously at speeds around 75 feet per second. In a dark room, the regular flashing of the stroboscope acted like a shutter. Doc, Germeshausen, and Grier modifed the conventional Ernemann camera for high-speed use by removing the original mechanical shutter and intermittent motion mechanism.
