In 1932, General Radio introduced the Type 548-A stroboscope, the commercial product of the early motor tests. The U-shaped mercury-filled tube was mounted in a Bakelite holder, and either stood on its base or was hand-held. The small motor and contactor controlled the flashing rate. The black box was both the power supply and the carrying case -- this was a portable unit (at 66 pounds!)
