Plate 1 from 'American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races' after Frederic Schiller Cozzens. The chromolithograph depicts some of the earliest, successful American yacht racers. The yachts line up in the middle ground and a red buoy is in the right foreground. Sailors are busy at work on the decks of all the yachts. The portfolio of prints was originally accompanied by a book by U.S. Navy Lieutenant James Douglas Jerrold Kelley that described each plate and provided historical context. Part of the publication information that was printed on a small label and pasted on the verso is still visible on the verso of this print.
