Harvard University's diving coach, Charles Batterman, executed a series of back dives for Edgerton's flash to make this composite photograph. Edgerton used this technique often when photographing repeatable phenomena, in order to portray the event as accurately and with as much detail as possible. The exposures here were timed manually.
