In order to improve understanding of the biomechanics underlying our sense of touch, the MIT Touch Lab developed this device to measure the compressibility of the human fingertip. A subject's finger was immersed in fluid and a probe then indented the fingerpad. To measure the compressibility of the fingertip, researchers noted changes in the volume of the fluid.
